I’m a trauma-focused counselor based in Austin, Texas, working with individuals and couples. I have a particular emphasis on EMDR and mindfulness, and I’m especially interested in how trauma shapes our understanding of ourselves and those around us.

At heart, I am a writer and a listener. Before becoming a counselor, I spent two decades working as a journalist, covering human rights issues, including five years in Africa. During that time, I found myself increasingly drawn not just to the stories themselves, but to the inner lives of the people who shared them with me. I realized I wanted to stay with people through their journeys, and, ideally, help them heal.

That desire eventually led me to counseling and into work with those navigating trauma, grief, and major life changes. My clinical experience includes supporting parents whose children have faced serious illness, as well as adults and couples, working through a range of trauma histories and relational challenges.

This site is a home for my writing; a place to reflect on therapy, trauma, grief, and how these experiences shape us. While my clinical work takes place within a private practice setting, this space allows me to explore the ideas, questions, and experiences that inform how I work as a counselor.

This is my logo in work and in life.

The stag has been  an important symbol for me in recent years, through many ups and downs, reminding me to follow my intuition; something I’ve gotten much better at over the years, and the rewards for doing so have been immense. I frequently rely on my intuition as a counselor, and I invite my clients to trust in theirs, too.

In this logo, I like the groundedness and strength of the animal, his steady gaze, and the more feminine flowers surrounding him, symbolizing perpetual growth and upward movement. I strive to bring each of these elements into my own life, and into my practice as a counselor.
